The Middle Passage was the crossing from Africa to the Americas, which the ships made carrying their 'cargo' of slaves.

Seasickness, heat and lack of air all contributed to the terrible smell. These conditions also encouraged disease. The Slaves treatment was horrific because the captured African men and women were considered less than human; they were "cargo", or "goods", and treated as such.
