1: Remove the parenthesis. Switch the -1 to a +1.

8x^2 + 3x - 12x^2+1

2: Simply the equation.

8x^2 + 3x - 12x^2+1

(2a. Group like terms)

= 8x^2 -12x^2+3x+1

(2b. Add the similar elements)

= -4x^2 + 3x + 1

So you would minus 12x^2 and 8x^2 to get 4x^2!
