Answer:

Fraction of animals that are kittens at the shelter is
(5x)/(12) where “x” represents the number of animals.

Solution:

Let the number of animals be ‘x’. We have to find out what fraction of animals at the shelter are kittens.

It is given that of the animals, 5/8 are cats which means the number of cats =
(5x)/(8)

Now it is given that number of kittens are 2/3 of the cats

Number of cats =
(5x)/(8)

Number of kittens = 2/3 of
(5x)/(8)

Number of kittens = 2/3
*
(5x)/(8)

Number of kittens =
(10x)/(24) =
(5x)/(12)

Thus fraction of animals that are kittens at the shelter is
(5x)/(12) where “x” represents the number of animals.
