How do you distinguish between multiples and factors of a number, and justify your evaluation of the LCM & GCF of a set of numbers?

- Multiples of a number are the numbers after multiplying the number

by an integer

- Ex: The multiples of 2 are 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , .......... because 2 × 1 = 2 ,

2 × 4 = 4 , 2 × 3 = 6 and 2 × 4 = 8

- Factors of a number are the number multiplied together to get the

number

- Ex: The factors of 6 are 1 , 2 , 3 , 6 because 1 × 6 = 6 and 2 × 3 = 6

- Lowest common multiple of the set of numbers (LCM) is the

smallest number divisible by these numbers

- Ex: The lowest common multiple of 2 and 3 is 6 because 6 is divisible

by 2 and 3 and there is no number before it divisible by both

- Greatest common factor of the set of numbers (GCF) is the highest

common factor of these numbers

- Ex: The greatest common factor of 12 and 18 is 6 because

→ The factors of 12 are 1 , 2 , 3, 4, 6, 12

→ The factors of 18 are 1 , 2 , 3 , 6 , 9 , 18

→ The greatest common factor on both numbers is 6
