Answer:

x = 8 and y = 100

Explanation:

y + 3x - 16 + 72 = 180

y + 3x + 56 = 180

x + y + 72 = 180

Simultaneous Equation

y + 3x + 56 = 180

y + x + 72 = 180

Take y + x + 72 = 180 from y + 3x + 56 = 180

y + 3x + 57 = 180

-

y + x + 72 = 180

=

2x - 16 = 0

Add the 16 onto both sides to have x on only one side.

2 x = 16

Divide by 2 to find x

x = 8

Substitute back into triangle

72 + x + y = 180

72 + 8 + y = 180

180 - 80 = 100

y = 100

Double check.

72 + y + (3x - 16) = 180 (A straight line is 180 degrees)

72 + 100 + (24 - 16) = 180

72 + 100 + 8 = 180
