1) The scientific name of swallowing is Deglutition. It is the process of passing of the food from mouth through pharynx into the esophagus while at the same time shutting the valve of the trachea known as epiglottis.

2) The parts of the pharynx through which the food passes are:

a) Oropharynx.

b)Laryngopharynx.

3) The functions of the esophagus are as follows:

i) Acts as a conduit or passage that allows food to travel from food to stomach.

ii) Regulates the movement of the food into the stomach.

iii) Helps in lubrication of the food that aids in digestion.

iv) It prevents the reverse movement of the food from stomach back into the mouth.
