Answer:

1. The unit rate is 0.20 dollars/ounce

2. The unit rate is 1.54 dollars/pound

Explanation:

* Lets explain the unit rate

- A rate is a ratio between two different types of quantities

- A unit rate show how many units of the first type of quantity

corresponds to one unit of the second type of quantity

* Lets solve the problems

1.

- An 18 1/2 fluid ounces bottle of water costs $3.79

- The unit rate is the cost per 1 ounce, so divide the cost of the

bottle by the number of ounces

∵ The bottle is 18 1/2 ounces

∵ The cost of the bottle is $3.79

∴ The unit rate = 3.79 ÷ (18 1/2) = 0.20

* The unit rate is 0.20 dollars/ounce

2.

- A 3 2/5 pound bag of yarn costs $5.25

- The unit rate is the cost per 1 pound , so divide the cost of the

bag by the number of pounds

∵ The bag is 3 2/5 pounds

∵ The cost of the bag is $5.25

∴ The unit rate = 5.25 ÷ (3 2/5) = 1.54

* The unit rate is 1.54 dollars/pound
