A cold-drawn AISI 1015 steel tube is 300 mm OD by 200 mm ID and is to be subjected to an external pressure caused by a shrink fit. What maximum pressure would cause the material of the tube to yield?. Syt = Syc = 600 MPa.

Answer:

The maximum pressure= 230.76 M Pa

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that

Outer diameter=300 mm

Inner diameter=200 mm

Condition for thick cylinder:

If thickness of cylinder is greater than 1/20 times of internal diameter,Then it is called thick cylinder.

We know that when thick cylinder is subjected to external pressure ,the hoop stress given as

\sigma _h=-P* (R_0^2+R_i^2)/(R_0^2-R_i^2)

Now by putting values

\sigma _h=-P* (150^2+100^2)/(150^2-100^2)

\sigma _h=-2.6 P

For safe design

\sigma _h <S_(yt)

So 2.6 P <600

P<230.76 MPa

So the maximum pressure= 230.76 M Pa
