The correct answer to this open question is the following.

When Congress passed the Compromise of 1850, it included five different bills that prevent any confrontation in the states regarding slaves after the United States won the Mexican-American War and the aquisition of new territories. The Wilmot Proviso of 1846 did not succeed to prohibit the use of slaves in the new territories acquired after the Mexican-American War. Indeed, differences with it created problems and these problems were one the causes for the beginning of the Civil War. The Missouri Compromise allowed the enter of Missouri as a slave state and Main as a Free state, to balance power between the Northern and Southern States. With the Compromise of 1850, California was admitted as a Free state, and the remained portions of land were divided to create New Mexico and Utah.
