so in order to solve this equation we are going to have to add x to each side of the equal sign to make the x a positive:

-6 - x = -4

+ x + x

making the equation look like this:

-6 = -4 + x

Now we are going to add 4 to each side of the equation to segregate our x:

-6 = -4 + x

+4 + 4

Making the equation look like this:

-2 = x

Now to check our work by placing -2 where x is in the equation -6 - x = -4:

-6 - x = -4 now -6 - (-2) = -4

Since the negative number is next to a subtraction sign -2 becomes positive 2

-6 + (2) = -4

We add them together and....:

-4 = -4
