Answer:

The presidential nomination of 1860, became a hustle when there was no candidate could get the required two-thirds majority. although Douglas got a majority of votes but still not got elected because of the condition of two-third majority. His moderate slavery nature led to a split in the democratic party. There was a strong reaction from the pro-slavery supporters mostly from the south. At last, there were two presidential nomination one from the north and the other from the south.
