First you have to multiply 2 by the term 'x+3'. You will get 2x+6. Then you have to bring the variables and constants to opposite sides. Moving 6 to the other side makes it -6+4. That is -2. You have to divide -2 by 2 to get x. Doing that you get that x is -1.

Explanation:

You are trying to figure out what the missing number is that will make 4

so we know that only 2 plus or multiplied by 2 can = 4

and because 2 is outside the parentheses it has to be multiplication meaning that x + 3 has to equal 2

4 = 2(x+3)​

4 = 2 ( -1 + 3)

4 = 2 (2)

2 * 2 =4

4 = 4
