a = -54/7

Explanation:

multiply 7 with the number in brackets

-35 = 5 + 7(a + 2)

-35 = 5 + 7a + 14

then add the numbers without symbols

-35 = 19 + 7a

make a the subject

-7a = 19 + 35

-7a = 54

divide the subject with the same number + the answer

-7a ÷ -7 = 54 ÷ -7

a = -54/7 or -7 5/7
