using the Quadratic Formula where

p = -b ±√(b^2 - 4ac)/2a

p = -2±√(2^2 - 4(1)(-8))/2(1)

p = -2±√(36)/2

The discriminant b^2 - 4ac > 0

So, there are two roots.

Simplifying the radical

and
