So Many Plastics
Recycling is popular in many communities and is used to reduce the amount of waste the population produces by creating new products with used materials. However, recycling is more complex than it appears. First, not all plastic is recyclable. Some things like straws, coffee cups, and plastic bags are not recyclable. Furthermore, plastic comes in different forms; some can be recycled by being melted and formed into new products (plastics called thermoplastics) while other plastics cannot be formed into new materials no matter how much they are heated (plastics called thermosets). Many people do not realize there is a difference in plastics and assume all plastics are the same and can be recycled. Plus, the more the thermoplastics are recycled, the weaker they become until they can no longer be recycled. Dirty plastic cannot be recycled, either. It must be cleaned before it can be recycled. So, recycling is more than just tossing a bottle in a recycling bin; there may be some work involved. Recycling has many benefits, but there is also more than meets the eye to this process.
