Answer:

x=-3 ,y=4

Explanation:

x+5y=17------(i)

-4x+3y=24------(ii)

use substitution method

x+5y=17

make x subject of the formula

x=17-5y-----(iii)

substitute equation (iii) into equation (ii)

-4x+3y=24

-4(17-5y)+3y=24

-68+20y+3y=24

23y=24+68

23y=92

divide both sides by 23

y=92/23

y=4

substitute y in equation (iii)

x=17-5y

x=17-5(4)

x=17-20

x=-3
