African Americans were freed from slavery in 1865. But that was not at all the end of the fight. There was still lynchings, discrimination, blacks being beaten, and a lot of prejudice. In some places blacks could not purchase or own homes, they could not get a job, they could not vote, and they were treated unfairly in court. Blacks could not use many public buildings and the United States was segregated.
