Millions of people watched the same program together, creating a common bond in the culture. Cable television brought more options and fewer people watched the same shows at the same time. The internet has adversely affected television viewership. The powerful cultural effect of common television viewing is almost gone now. There are certainly wildly popular shows, some produced by Netflix and Amazon, completely bypassing traditional television networks. But the days of millions upon millions of people all watching the same show in common are gone.
