George Washington handed over his presidency as the chief executive of the United States of America to John Adams. He did this for several reasons, but one of them was because he wanted to retire. Therefore, as vice president, John Adams was obliged to become the next president because Washington refused to serve a third term.

It was through his foreign service that John Adams came into focus as a national leader. ... The plan was postponed, however, when George Washington was unanimously elected the first president of the United States in 1789 with John Adams as his vice president. I hope this helps!
