Let

p-----> the original price per pound

x-----> the new price per pound

we know that


x=p+0.75 -----> equation A


3x=5.88 ----> equation B

substitute equation A in equation B


3(p+0.75)=5.88 -----> equation that determine the original price per pound

solve for p


3p+2.25=5.88


3p=5.88-2.25


3p=3.63


p=3.63/3=\$1.21
