a)X + Y = 20

b) X * Y = 36

Isolate Y in a: X= 20 - Y

Plug into b: (20-Y) * Y=36

20 Y - Y^2 = 36

0 = Y^2 - 20Y + 36

0 = (Y -18)(Y-2)

Y-18= 0, Y=18

Y-2= 0, Y= 2

Final answer: 2 and 18

Hope it’s clear :)
