3(x + 1 1/2)-3

distribute the three to the terms inside the parenthesis

3x + 4 1/2 - 3

subtract 3 from 4 1/2

3x + 1 1/2

Answer: No, they are not equivalent.

Explanation:

in the first expression, after you distribute it, it would equal, 3x + 4 1/2. the second expression is not equal to 3x + 4 1/2. 3x + 4 1/2 > 3x + 1 1/2
