Let the original price be = x

There was 40% off on x.

So, sales price was =
x-0.40x=0.60x

Tt was then put on clearance an additional 25% off the sale price.

Means the price now becomes:
0.60x-0.25(0.60x)=0.45x

With the help of coupon, she got $5 off and paid no more than $7.60, so the equation becomes:


0.45x-5\leq 7.60

=>
0.45x \leq 7.60+5

=>
0.45x \leq 12.60

=>
x\leq 28

Hence, the original price of the sweater was $28.
