12 is your answer.
12 x 2 = 24 (The larger number, which is twice the smaller).
24 + 12 = 36 ("...whose sum is 36.")
Note that it states that the answer is "the difference" (subtraction) of the two numbers:
24 - 12 = 12
12 is your answer.
