Can someone reword this?

European leaders secured their rule over the Crusader states. When Muslim forces regrouped and attacked Edessa, the Teutonic Knights, the Knights Hospitaller, and the Knights-Templar rode forth under the banner of the Second Crusade. King Louis VII of France and Emperor Conrad III of Germany led armies to the Holy Land. The Crusaders turned their attention to Damascus rather than Edessa. Due to this, their unorganized attack resulted in failure. The Crusaders who remained continued to stay focused on defending the Kingdom of Jerusalem while Muslim forces became more powerful.
