European leaders secured their rule over the Crusader countries. When Muslim forces regrouped and attacked Edessa, the Teutonic Knights, the Knights Hospitaller and the Knights-Templar ran under the banner of the Second Crusade. France's King Louis VII and Germany's Emperor Conrad III led the armies to the Holy Land. The Crusaders turned their attention not to Edessa but to Damascus. Due to this, their unorganized attack failed. The Crusaders who remained remained focused on defending the Kingdom of Jerusalem while Muslim forces became more powerful.
