A helicopter above the ground is descending at 3.5m/s. It drops a package from rest (relative to the helicopter). Just before it hits the ground the package is falling at a rate of 13.4m/s relative to the ground. Find the velocity of the package relative to the helicopter.

A. 9.9m/s, up
B. 9.9m/s, down
C. 16.9m/s, down
D, 16.9m/s, up

Answer:

The velocity of the package relative to the helicopter is 9.9 m/s down.

(B) is correct option

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that,

Velocity of helicopter = 3.5 m/s

Velocity of package = 13.4 m/s

We need to calculate the velocity of the package relative to the helicopter

Just before hitting the ground

Velocity of package relative to helicopter = Velocity of package relative to ground - Velocity of helicopter relative to ground

v_(p)_(h)=v_(p)_(g)-v_(h)_(g)

Put the value into the formula

v_(p)_(h)=13.4-3.5

v_(p)_(h)=9.9\ m/s

Hence, The velocity of the package relative to the helicopter is 9.9 m/s down.
