Eli had $10, but he lost some of it. His mom doubled the money he had left. Eli wrote the expression 2(10 – k) to show how much money he has now, where k is the amount of money he lost. Aisha wrote another correct expression, 20 – 2k, to also show how much money Eli has now. Use the drop-down menus to explain what each part of Eli's and Aisha's expressions mean.

Answer:

Equation 1

In the story it said Eli's mom doubled the money he left, that is what the two represents. 10 is the original amount he had. -k is the money he lost.

Equation 2

20 is the the result of the original 10 being multiplied. -2k, now the 2 is still the amount that the mom doubled his amount by, and the k is how much money Eli lost.
