A car left Ottawa at 1 p.m. going at 35 mph. A second car left the city at 4 p.m. going in the same direction at 50 mph. At what time will the second car catch up with the first?

Explanation:

From 1 pm to 4pm, its been 3 hours.

First car traveled
35*3=105 miles before the 2nd car started. Hence, second car is 105 miles behind.


Second car's speed is
50-35=15 mph more than first car, so he catches up 15 miles in 1 hour.

Second car needs to catch-up 105 miles @ catching-up rate of 15 miles every hour.


So, its gonna take 7 hours (
(105)/(15)=7 for the 2nd car to catchup.

7 hours from 4pm is at 11pm (they will meet)
