$40 = 5a + 8s

Explanation:

For this question all we need to know is that $40 is equal to 5 prices of the adult tickets plus the 8 prices of the student tickets. From here we can just give a variable to each price and make an equation, like so

Let "a" be the price of the adult ticket and

Let "s" be the price of the adult ticket, then....

$40 = 5a + 8s

(Just to make sure you understand I will repeat. 5 comes from he fact hat there were 5 adult tickets sold which means that there is 5 adult ticket prices in the $40, and exactly the same reasoning goes for the student tickets, 8 students tickets were sold which means the is 8 prices of the student ticket inside the $40.)
