2 1/3 ; 9 1/3

Explanation:

Given that:

Outside temperature increases by 3 1/2 degrees every 1 1/2 hours

The rate per hour of temperature increase will be :

Let rate per hour = x

3 1/2 = 1 1/2

x = 1

Cross multiply :

1 1/2 * x = 3 1/2 * 1

3x/2= 7/2

Multiply both sides by 2/3

3x/2 * 2/3 = 7/2 * 2/3

x = 14/ 6

x = 2 2/6

x = 2 1/3

Hence, outside temperature increases at the rate of 2 1/3 degrees per hour.

2.) Temperature increase after 4 hours :

(Temperature rate per hour * number of hours)

(2 1/3) * 4

(7/3) * 4

28 / 3

= 9 1/3

Hence, temperature increase after 4 hours = 9 1/3
