This is going to be a long answer. The South Economy was based mostly on agriculture & most of that was used on cash crops like cotton and tobacco.

The North was an industrial power house. It held over 70 percent of the factories and railroads of the nation. The north also had over double the population.

The South and the North were very different most of this comes from the fact that the North did not like slavary and the South based a lot of it's economy on it. The North was also Republican while the South was Democratic, this political difference caused the two sides to slowly become more distant over time. The longer the North and South held these differences the worse they would become.
