The $XYZ$ company has to pay $5,000 for rent each month. In addition, their monthly electricity bill is $1.45 per kilowatt-hour of electricity used. If the total cost for both rent and electricity in January was $16,520.25, how many kilowatt-hours of electricity did they use?

Answer:

7,945 kilowatt-hours

Explanation:

Since the monthly rent is $5,000, first subtract 5,000 from the total cost so that you only have the cost for the electricity bill:

16,520.25 - 5,000 = 11,520.25

Then, since the electricity bill is $1.45 per kilowatt-hour used, divide the new total by 1.45:

11,520.25 ÷ 1.45 = 7,945

Hope this helped!
