\bf{5(2x-1)=85}

Divide both sides by 5.

  • \bf{2x-1=(85)/(5) }

Divide 85 by 5 to get 17.

  • \bf{2x-1=17}

Add 1 to both sides.

  • \bf{2x=17+1}

Add 17 and 1 to get 18.

  • \bf{2x=18}

Divide both sides by 2.

  • \bf{x=(18)/(2) }

Divide 18 by 2 to get 9.

  • \bf{x=9 \ \ \to \ \ \ Answer}

Verification

Let x = 9.

  • \sf{5*(2*9-1)=85 \ \ \to \ \ \ Multiply }

  • \sf{5*(18-1)=85 \ \ \to \ \ \ [Subtract] }

  • \sf{5*17=85 \ \ \to \ \ \ [Multiply]}

  • \sf{85=85 \ \ \to \ \ \ [It \ is \ satisfied \ the \ equality]}
