Answer:

Relief is a technique in which the statue is attached to the background plane. A free-standing statue (as suggested by its name) exists without the back support and can be sculptured and seen from all angles.

Step-by-step explanation:

Relief sculpture and free standing sculpture are both sculptural techniques that are important in art. Relief sculpture is any work which projects from but which belongs to the wall while free-standing sculpture is unattached to the background and has no spaced on all sides. Both of these served important roles in honoring different events and people in history.

Relief sculpture is beneficial than free-standing when it comes to economic reasons. Since the art is attached to the wall, it doesn't require so much space and is able to portray a far wider range of subjects. It is also free from the problems of weight and physical balance that free-standing sculptures have. Being carved directly to the wall makes the relief sculptures suitable for architectural projects.

One drawback for relief sculptures is that it cannot express art in a full circumference. It mostly needs to be halved as it only slightly projects from the background. This can be a limited space for some artists who want to express their art fully (from front to back).
