Phospholipids consist of a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. These two components create a cell's double membrane.
In the phospholipid bilayer, the heads of the phospholipids are found at the surface of the intracellular membrane and extracellular, while the tails are found in between each of the heads. The phospholipids are very closely packed, with the heads more or less touching, and the tails found attached.
