Suppose that 71% of the surface of the Earth is covered in water, and a random number generator uses latitude and longitude to select a random location on the Earth. If 6 locations are generated, what is the probability that at least 1 of those locations is over land?

Answer:

.00059 or .0006

Explanation:

You are trying to find what won't be in the water because there are many combinations so you use a complement formula.

1-0.79=0.29

Use the left over percentage in an equation to determine the probability.

1-(0.29)^6=0.000594823

The exponent 6 comes from the number of locations.
