Let the two numbers be x and y

since the ratio the two numbers is 4:3,

we can write,

(x)/(y) = (4)/(3)

3x = 4y

x = (4)/(3) y

If 5 is subtracted from this ratio , the new ratio is 7:3. It can be written as,

(x - 5)/(y - 5) = (7)/(3)

3(x - 5) = 7(y - 5)

3x - 15 = 7y - 35

put \: x = (4)/(3) y \: in \: \: 3x - 15 = 3y - 35,

we get,

3( (4)/(3) y) - 15 = 7y - 35

(12y)/(3) - 7y = - 35 + 15

(12y - 21y)/(3) = - 20

- 9y = - 60

y = (60)/(9)

y = (20)/(3)

put \: y = (60)/(3 ) \: \: \: in \: \: x = (4)/(3) y,

we get,

x = (4)/(3) * (20)/(3)

x = (80)/(9)

hence \: the \: numbers \: are \: \: (60)/(3 ) \: and \: \: (80)/(3)
