An art student uses a roll of wallpaper to decorate two gift boxes. The student will use 1 1 4 yards of paper for one box and 7 8 yard of paper for the other box. The paper must be cut into pieces that are 1 8 yard long. How many pieces will the student cut to use for the gift boxes?

Total no of rolls required is the sum of
1(1)/(4) yards and
(7)/(8) yard. So,

Let there are x no of pieces will the student cut to use for the gift boxes. It can be calculated as :


x=((17)/(8))/((1)/(8))\\\\=17

Hence, the student will cut 17 pieces to use the gift boxes.
