Assume;

20% of solution = x

So,

Amount of pure water = 40 gallons - x

Amount of pure water = 40 - x

Computation:

20% of x = 9% of 40 gallon

0.2 x = 3.6

x = 3.6 / 0.2

x = 18 gallon

So,

Amount of chemical solution = 18 gallon

Amount of pure water = Total solution - Amount of chemical solution

Amount of pure water = 40 -18
