Dan is going to rent a truck for one day. There are two companies he can choose from, and they have the following prices. Company A charges $88 and allows unlimited mileage. Company B has an initial fee of $55 and charges an additional $0.60 for every mile driven. For what mileages will Company A charge less than Company B? Use m for the number of miles driven, and solve your inequality for m.

Answer:

\textsf {55 miles}

Explanation:

\textsf {Company A}

\textsf {Fee = 88}

\textsf {Mileage = unlimited (0 charged)}

\textsf {Equation = 88 (Statement 1)}

\textsf {Company B}

\textsf {Fee = 55}

\textsf {Mileage = 0.60 per mile}

\textsf {Equation = 55 + 0.60m (Statement 2)}

\textsf {Now, the inequality will be :}

\mathsf {88 < 55 + 0.60m}

\mathsf {0.60m > 33}

\mathsf {m > (33)/(0.60) }

\mathsf {m > 55}

Hence, for Company A will charge less than Company B when the mileage is greater than 55 miles.
