Answer:
x = -7
Explanation:
Apply the distributed property: -5x - -5 = 40
Simplify: -5x + 5 = 40
Subtract 5 from each side, so it now looks like this: -5x = 35
Divide each side by -5 to cancel out the -5 next to x. It should now look like this: x = -7

you would distribute the -5 to the x and the -1, so it would be:
-5x+5=40
you would then subtract 5 from both sides, so you would get:
-5x=35
you would then divide by -5 on both sides, so you would get:
x=-7
