Explanation:

∠40°+∠adjacent to it =180°

∠adjacent= 180-40=140°

we see that 2 of the sides of one of the small triangles are congruent so that triangle is isoscel so the base angles are congruent as well

because sum of angles in a triangle has to be 180,

140 +x+x=180 so x=20°

from the right triange we see thhat y +90+20 =180 because sum of angle in a triangle has to be 180 so y=70
