In a girl's bank, there is a collection of nickels, dimes, and quarters which amounts to $9.50. There are four times as many quarters as nickels, and 3 more dimes than nickels. How many coins of each kind are there?​

Let the amount of nickels be x

Let the amount of dimes be y

Let the amount of quarters be z

If the total collection amounts to $9.50, then;

x+y+z = 9.50 ..... 1

If there are four times as many quarters as nickels, then;

z = 4x .... 2

Also if there are 3 more dimes than nickels then;

y = x+3 .... 3

Substitute 2 and 3 into 1;

x + x+3 + 4x = 9.50

6x = 9.50 -5

6x = 4.50

x = 4.50/6

x = $0.75

Since y = x +3

y = 0.75 + 3

y = $3.75

Also, z = 4x

z = 0.75(5)

z = $3.0
