Name the figurative language and then give me an example of it. Then, explain it's purpose.

An example of a metaphor could be, “Life is a rollercoaster”
A metaphor is figurative language used to compare unlike things. While a metaphor is close to a simile, a metaphor doesn’t use “like” or “as”. A metaphor doesn’t necessarily have to be true. It basically says one thing is another thing.
