What is the main purpose of "falling action" in a story?

Without "falling action," the plot would be incomplete.
After the "falling action," the story winds down to its conclusion.
"Falling action" gives authors a way to show how characters have changed.
"Falling action" is the part of the plot that tells why a character is important. plz help me!!!
