Exercise 1

Robb’s Fruit Farm consists of 100 acres on which three different types of apples grow. On 25 acres, the farm grows Empire apples. McIntosh apples grow on 30% of the farm. The remainder of the farm grows Fuji apples. Shade in the grid below to represent the portion of the farm each type of apple occupies. Use a different color for each type of apple. Create a key to identify which color represents each type of apple.

Answer:

Shade in 25 squares yellow. Next shade in 30 squares green. Then shade the remainder of the squares red. For the key, Empire will be yellow and the ratio would be 25/100 or 1/4. For McIntosh, that is the green and the ratio is 30/100 or 3/10. Finally, for Fuji, that is the red and the ratio will be 45/100 or 7/20.

Step by Step Answer:

25 for Empire because it says 25 acres. 30 for McIntosh because 30% of 100 is 30. To find Fuji, you add the 25 and 30 to get 55. You then subtract the 55 from 100 to get 45.
