Let his sam’s age = y
And his brothers age = x
If y = x*(1/2)
And y = x - 8
x - 8 = x/2
Cross multiply
2(x - 8) = x
2x - 16 = x
Collect like terms
2x - x = 16
x = 16
Hence, if y = x/2
y = 16/2
y = 8
Check:
y = x/2
8=16/2
8 = 16
