Emily wanted to make shish kabobs for a barbecue she was having for her swim party. The bag she purchased from the grocery store contained a total of 75 shrimp. Emily noticed that she had a dozen skewers to utilize. Emily claims that she will be able to include 5 shrimp on each skewer and have a total of 15 left over. Explain why we can quickly see Emily made a mistake just by looking at the number of shrimp she had left over. Please use proper vocabulary in your explanation. As part of your explanation please be sure to tell me how many shrimp can fit on each skewer and if there are any left over.

Answer:

Emily's claim is correct that with 12 skewers which can hold 5 shrimp each, there will be 15 leftovers.

Explanation:

Given that:

Total number of shrimp contained in the bag of Emily = 75

Number of skewers available = A dozen

A dozen means 12.

Therefore, there are 12 number of skewers available.

Each skewer can have = 5 number of shrimp

Total number of shrimp on the 12 skewers = 12
* 5 = 60

Total number of leftover = Total number of shrimp in the bag - Total number of shrimp on the 12 skewers = 75 - 60 = 15

Therefore, Emily's claim is correct that with 12 skewers which can hold 5 shrimp each, there will be 15 leftovers.
