Reread this short passage from Frederick Douglass's autobiography. You will be free as soon as you are twenty-one, but I am a slave for life! Have not I as good a right to be free as you have? Which word has a connotative meaning that is less positive than its denotative meaning?

Answer:

I am not entirely sure, but I would guess that in the passage the word with a negative connatatve meaning would be life. While life typically has a positive denotative meaning, in this instance it takes on a negative connative meaning because it is how long Douglass will be a slave. A life sentence is not positive when you are trapped.
