O'Brien says that "Talking about Courage" was composed in line with Norman Bowker who, three years after the story was composed, balanced himself in the YMCA. O'Brien says that in 1975, just before Saigon at long last imploded, he got a seventeen-page, transcribed letter from Bowker saying that he was unable to locate a significant use for his life after the war. He worked a few brief positions and lived with his folks. At a certain point he selected junior school, yet he in the end exited.
